DIY Intro: Improve your Computing Experience

With a lot of the computer repair jobs that I take on, I notice that a lot of the problems I am repairing could have been deterred with a little bit of a preventive maintenance and good rules of thumb. The problem is, with a first time attempt many folks don't know where to find this information or don't know the problem is occurring often due to limitations in Windows itself. I will attempt to post easy to follow quick tutorials in this series to prevent these problems before they occur. That being said, if you are an advance computer user this is probably not the series of articles for you, as most of this information is readily available in various locations online, but it is what I have found to be most useful for my customers.

Priceprotectr

If you spend a lot of time shopping at Amazon.com, you may find this site useful. Although it is not highly publicized for obvious reasons, if Amazon.com lowers a price on a product you have purchased within the previous 30 days, they will refund the difference with no fuss. The catch is you have to ask them to do it.

By simply entering in what you ordered, when, and for how much, Priceprotectr will automatically e-mail you if the price drops. To my surprise, the first product I tracked was indeed lowered in price and I have gotten several refunds since using this tracking site. They also track price changes for other online merchants including Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, Sears and Staples. A full list of merchants they track and instructions for requesting refunds can be found on their retailers page.

DesignReaction.org

DesignReaction.org creates a new platform for exhibiting and distributing social, political, and environmental poster designs.

Design Reaction serves the graphic design community, non-profit organizations and the general public in two unique ways. Foremost, it serves as an online community for designers interested in designing visual reactions to timely issues in the form of posters. Design Reaction makes high quality graphic design work available to non-profit organizations via the Internet. Secondly, the site serves as a clearinghouse for existing posters to spread the messages that we as designers feel are so important to the welfare of our society.

For this site, I started with a common Content Management System called Wordpress ( the same one this very site runs on ). In addition to the out of the box page/content creation and blogging engine, I added several necessary features:

  • Upload ability for artists to Submit Posters with various requirements/configurations.
  • Administrator Users can review and then publish or deny uploaded posters.
  • Non Profit groups can create a “Call For Posters” to assist their cause.
  • A Dynamic Gallery for all posters searchable by name, description, and tags.
  • Custom Theme development from Designer’s specifications to tie the entire site together with a unified design.

See for yourself at http://www.designreaction.org.
